- Wing Incidence, sweep and drilling !
I made
sure I read and reread the process of setting sweep and incidence.
However I already know the left wing required removing, some
filing of the rear spar and then putting back into place.
The
left wing is slightly tighter fit than the right and takes some
pushing and heaving to get the wing out and back in again.
Once
that was done I measured from the tail to a rivet in the end of
the wing to measure the triangulation. 173" on both sides
... I kid you not !
Dangling the plumb bobs from the wing edges also showed that there
was zero sweep.
Next
up is setting the incidence using a spirit level and a 3" block of
wood. I had to lift the wing slightly in the rear spar (you
can see in the photographs below) but the hole distance is
still ok. In fact I have a just smidge more than required,
which is why I left the wings with a 0.1 degree positive
incidence. If I had gone level my drilling would need to be
perfect, and even with a drilling jig made out of aluminium to
keep the drill straight I decided to air on the side of safety.
It is
imperative that both wings are set to the same incidence however.
I think I got mine close enough for government work !
You
next check that the flaps will close against the bottom of the
skin when in trail with the wing. I have a slight gap which
is not surprising given the wing is slightly low. I will
close this by tweaking (it wont need much) the skin to close it
up.
Right
wing drilled first #40 and a long reach cleco installed

The same for the left

The instructions say to get a beer, well they do at
the bottom of the page so I skipped the rest for today and drove
home for a couple of beers !
Jobs to be done while wings are on
